Roulette 101: Outside Bets
Any bet you make in roulette that is outside the boundaries of the number grid is called an outside bet. Outside bets have lesser payoffs compared to inside bets (the highest payoff from outside bets is at two to one).
If you're a roulette player who wants to cash in on a game, then outside bets give you better odds at winning than the inside bets. The payoff may not be that high for outside bets, but with a good betting strategy you can make some serious cash over time.
Check out the roulette table layout, one of the first things you'll notice are the boxes labeled as "1st 12", "2nd 12", and "3rd 12". By placing chips on one these boxes you make a wager on any number in the group of twelve numbers on the roulette table layout.
You win if the ball lands on any number in the group you chose. This outside bet has a payoff of two to one. This is the highest amount of payoff in the outside bets of roulette. The odds of winning are up to 38 to 12.
Another outside bet that involves twelve numbers on the roulette table is the column bet. This time, you're not just betting on a group of number on the roulette wheel. With a column bet, you bet that a number in your selected column in the number grid will come up.
To make this outside bet place your chips in any of the boxes marked as "2 to 1". This outside bet also pays at two to one and the odds are also 38 to 12. Just remember that in this outside bet, the 0 and the 00 don't count. They're not part of any column on the roulette table.
Another outside bet in roulette is the Red or Black bet. This outside bet involves 18 numbers on the wheel. You're just betting that the color of the number the ball lands on is either a black or red (depends on what you choose). There is an almost 50% chance for this bet to win but the payoff is only one to one.
The next couple of outside bets also have a 38 to 18 chance of winning in roulette with a payoff of one to one. First is the Even or Odd bet. This is essentially just betting if the number that turns out is odd or even. The second one is called the Low or High bet. You're wagering either on one to eighteen or 19 to 36 on the roulette table.
The outside bets have less payoffs but have a bigger chance of winning. If you're a beginner and would want to start roulette by making some money then the outside bets are a great choice.
